Vestibular therapy treatment for Dizziness and Vertigo Jun20th 2023

We’ve all felt dizzy, as if we can’t concentrate or stay upright without swaying or collapsing.  Many of us have also experienced “tunnel vision,” in which our peripheral vision becomes dark for a few seconds. This can be scary and leave you feeling disoriented and concerned about your well-being, especially if it happens often!

If this is affecting your daily life, you may benefit from seeing a therapist at American Headache Institute in Rochester Hills, MI to help you find a long-term solution to your problem. Our therapists specialize in assisting patients suffering from dizziness and vertigo to return to a normal lifestyle without fear of injury.

What is the difference between vertigo and dizziness?

Dizziness and vertigo are not the same! The most common cause of vertigo is an imbalance in the inner ear, also known as the “vestibular system.”

Your vestibular system assists you in maintaining your balance and center of gravity by sending movement messages to your brain. When this is impaired, the necessary messages from your brain are blocked, and your movement is affected.

You may feel as if the world is spinning around you, and you may find it difficult to focus your vision for long periods of time or to stand/move properly without feeling dizzy. Some of the most common causes of vertigo are listed below.

Why am I feeling dizzy?

There are several possible causes for your dizziness and unsteadiness. Some of the most common causes that our therapists at American Headache Institute have treated include:

Migraines

Migraines are extremely common! They can be very painful, and depending on when you get one, you could be benched for the rest of the day. Migraines can have an effect on your vestibular system, resulting in vertigo and sensitivity to light or sound. Vision may also be affected.

Vestibular neuropathy

This is an infection of the inner ear that can cause vertigo, nausea, vomiting, and difficulty concentrating.

Stroke

A stroke impairs movement throughout your body. If you have recently had a stroke, you may experience waves of vertigo that last for extended periods of time.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)

BPPV is the most common cause of vertigo. This condition occurs when the small calcium crystals in your ears break apart and travel to different parts of your ear where they should not be. This can cause unexpected spinning sensations (vertigo) and inner ear discomfort.

Meniere’s syndrome

This happens when fluid accumulates in your ear(s). This usually includes “ringing” in your ear and intense dizziness that can last for hours. You may also experience transient hearing loss.

If you have any of the following symptoms, you may have vertigo:

  • Difficulties seeing or speaking
  • Inability to concentrate or stay alert
  • Vomiting or nausea
  • Dual vision
  • Sweating
  • Abnormal eye movements
  • Weakness in one’s arm or leg

What role can vestibular therapy play in my treatment?

Our physiotherapists are highly skilled in diagnosing and treating dizziness and vertigo for our patients in Rochester Hills, MI. Epley and Cawthorne head exercises are required for vestibular therapy.

In patients with BPPV, the Epley Maneuver assists in repositioning the canalith in order to transfer damaged calcium crystals. Cawthorne head exercises focus on reducing nerve sensitivity and vertiginous effects.

Your therapist will assess your condition and develop a personalized treatment plan to address your concerns and get you back on your feet.

It’s important to remember that each patient has a unique condition, and no two treatment plans are alike! Yours will be tailored to your specific requirements, and if you have any questions about your treatment, please contact us.
